Translator Johanna Knoll
A few of words about me. My native language is Finnish; however, I have actively used the German language since childhood. When working as a translator I am fascinated by language, its images, and concepts – and thinking about terms as well as style. For me both languages and cultures are very familiar, so it is rewarding to work to ensure that the same message and style are maintained in the translation. In my work I am able to explore a variety of fields and themes, which is quite exciting.
I started my studies at the University of Heidelberg at the German language and literature department. After five semesters I continued my studies at the University of Jyväskylä. My studies in Jyväskylä consisted of both German and Finnish language and literature. I also obtained a teaching qualification in German and Finnish. On completion of my master’s degree, and following a period of further study, I was awarded a Licentiate of Philosophy in German literature from the University of Jyväskylä. Although I live in Finland, at home we use both languages and are in contact with both cultures.
